Syllabus: | This unit introduces key concepts of hydrogeology and the importance of groundwater and the role geology plays in understanding, appraising and managing the valuable and hidden resource. The unit will focus on the hydrologic cycle, recharge-discharge phenomena, groundwater-surface water interactions, aquifer types and their characteristics, groundwater flow, aquifer tests, groundwater quality and contamination, Western Australia groundwater systems, and hydrogeology in mining. A second focus is in Engineering geology and (a) Engineering classification of rocks and soils, elementary rock mechanics and rocks as construction materials, and (b) Engineering geology of tunnels, open excavations, dams, reservoirs, tailings dams, and foundations for buildings and bridges. |
