UNIT REFERENCES, TEXTS, OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS: | The most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes, will be provided in the unit outline. |
Additional Tuition Pattern Information: | This unit consists of an intensive five-day session of classroom activities in Kalgoorlie with assessments completed with the five-day program except for Assignment 2 which is scheduled for submission 7 days after completion of the 5th day of the program. The exam will be held on 5th day of the intensive program. Each session will begin with a lecture/workshop type presentation followed by hands on tutorial or assignment. |
Syllabus: | This unit provides students with an introduction to strategic open pit planning and design concepts. Students will explore 3D ultimate pit limit algorithms and their applications, optimisation in open pit design and future concepts in open pit mining. The design process in open pit mining, mine project evaluation, mine haulage systems, cut-off grade analysis, bench slope, haul road and pushback design, will also be examined. This unit will also introduce students to computer-aided haul road generation and dump design, heuristic long and short-term scheduling techniques, mathematical optimisation for sequencing and scheduling, drilling and blasting design, equipment selection and monitoring and grade control strategies. The emphasis of this unit will be on design principles and discussion of case studies to illustrate applications of the core principles within the design process. |
