Syllabus: | Communication Skills is designed to develop students' analytical and critical thinking and communication skills in English for undergraduate study in the discipline of Science, Engineering, and Health Sciences. This unit aims to develop students’ skill in listening, speaking, reading, viewing and writing as well as enhancing students’ ability to read and interpret discipline-specific text for a range of purposes, audiences and contexts and to develop student production of discipline-specific text for a range of purposes, audiences and contexts. The unit will also explore an understanding of ways in which meaning is conveyed and the use of language for communication in multiple contexts. Students’ engagement in critical analysis and evaluation will also form an integral part of the learning experience. The unit will use the broad themes of Health, Safety, Environment and Culture to develop students’ reading, listening and viewing skills in order to analyse and evaluate the purpose, stylistic qualities and conventions of text for the disciplines of Science, Engineering and Health Sciences. Students will develop strategies for speaking and writing their own analytical responses to topics relevant to Health, Safety, Environment and Culture. The unit is designed to foster an appreciation of the value of English for lifelong learning in the discipline areas of Science, Engineering and Health. |
