Course Overview
Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
This course provides advanced technical and professional training for those intending to upgrade their geology qualifications or retrain in a new branch of geoscience. Streams are available in Basin Analysis and Petroleum Geology and Mineral Exploration and Mining Geology.

Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Master Degree (Coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Specifically, applicants require a Bachelor Degree in Geoscience.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Intermediate Awards (Generic)
A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees Apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course.

Course Organisation
Master Degrees (Coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. apply advanced geological principles and concepts in theoretical, practical and vocational situations
2. analyse and synthesise complex geological problems using logical scientific methods and creative thinking at an abstract level
3. synthesise geological data on a range of spatial and temporal scales to make interpretations that allow for scientific uncertainty
4. communicate technical research skills concisely and accurately using written, visual, and verbal means to interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies and conclusions for specialist and non-specialist audiences
5. employ technical and communication skills to design, collect, analyse and theorise geological data that contribute to professional practice or scholarship
6. acquire an extensive geological knowledge and expertise from a range of sources in a variety of situations to enable the planning and execution of a substantial research-based project and/or piece of scholarship
7. appreciate international perspectives on geoscience and recognise the importance of global standards for the collection and reporting geological data
8. recognise the need for sustainable use of Earth’s resources, and value environmental, indigenous and other community perspectives on geological activities
9. work ethically and professionally with a high level of personal autonomy and accountability as an individual and as part of a team, complying with applicable legislation and managing time and other resources efficiently and effectively
Duration and Availability
This fee-paying course is one and a half years full-time or equivalent part-time study. Two intakes are offered each year, in February and July.
