Course Overview
Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
This one year full time equivalent course is for educators in a broad range of fields related to education who hold a four-year teacher education degree or equivalent. The course curriculum builds on students' professional knowledge with an emphasis on critical and independent thinking. The course consists of coursework units, including a Negotiated Capstone Project. Successful completion of the course may enable students to undertake doctoral level study. Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Master Degree (Coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
An education/teaching degree assessed as being the equivalent of a four-year Australian degree (normally a Bachelor of Education or a four-year combined/double education degree e.g. BSc/BEd) or a three-year degree in a non-education discipline (e.g. Arts, Science, Commerce) plus a minimum one-year teaching qualification such as a Graduate Diploma in Education or Master of Teaching or equivalent. A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is also required.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Alternative formal professional development experiences such as courses, workshops and ongoing continuing education are considered when determining credit for recognised learning.

Course Organisation
Master Degrees (Coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of educational theory and pedagogy and an appreciation of the importance of sustainable development in the discipline
2. ability to formulate and investigate problems, proposing solutions and improving current practices; capacity to apply critical reasoning to issues and evaluate opinions and to reflect on the literature using an evidence-based approach, independent thought and informed judgement
3. ability to process material and critically analyse and integrate information from a wide range of sources; ability to articulate a sound argument, identify a problem and introduce innovative solutions
4. ability to collect, analyse and organise information and ideas and to convey those ideas clearly and fluently, in both written and spoken form; select and use the appropriate level, style and means of communication; demonstrates effective communication skills for proficient interpersonal and professional interactions. Students undertaking the research stream: clear communication of the results of research in an appropriate format and a clear explanation and defence of research findings
5. ability to engage effectively and appropriately with information and communication technologies; to select and use appropriate information and communication technology to retrieve, manipulate and present information
6. demonstrate capacity for independent self-directed learning; possess self-knowledge and the ability to assess critically their own performance by evaluating a range of learning interactions to foster feedback and self-development as a reflective practitioner and lifelong learner
7. possess an international perspective on education and the ability to consider issues from a variety of perspectives with view to informing professional practice; recognise intercultural issues relevant to professional practice
8. aware of their own culture and its perspectives and other cultures and their perspectives
9. possess the abilities and skills that provide a foundation for present and future leadership in education; has an appreciation of social and ethical responsibilities and the ability to apply ethical standards
Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. Two intakes are offered each year, in March and August.
