Students select their pathway of study in product, jewellery, furniture or object design in the 3D Design major. This major provides students with a creatively expansive experience to express their ingenuity, culture, intellectual abilities and skills through designing in three dimensions. Project based activities develop design processes that embed professional standards with individual thoughts, concepts and ideals. Components of the third year program are self-directed and lead to exhibition and publication of work. This design major is directed towards employment outcomes as a designer or practitioner in the creative industries sectors. Higher study directions include areas of specialisation in design, art, research or education.
Professional Recognition
On completion of the course, students may apply for professional membership of various design institutes including the Design Institute of Australia (DIA).

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials including materials and exhibition costs.
Major Overview Note
Students choosing this major within the Bachelor of Arts degree will also choose another major or an elective stream. Choosing a second major allows students to study in an additional discipline area. Choosing an elective stream allows students to undertake further study in the discipline of their first major or choose from a variety of units from around the University.
Major/Stream Entry and Completion Details
Articulation
Students entering with an Advanced Diploma from TAFE may be granted 300 credits.
Major Entry/Completion Note
Students must complete two of the following units in their first year to progress into the major: Design Practice 1 (GRDE1003), Design Technology (GRDE1010), 3D essentials (VISA1000) or Design Computing 1 (GRDE1004).

A graduate of this course can:
1. apply discipline knowledge of creative practise in design application, studio practice and critical discourse; contribute to evidence based practice through visual and technical research
2. think critically and reflectively by incorporating creativity within research, design practise and contemporary art practice
3. critically evaluate the design specific visual culture, technology and relevant art/design literature; synthesise information from a range of sources
4. demonstrate effective visual, spoken, written and technical communication appropriate to: product, jewellery, furniture or object design within the confines of design practice, making and manufacture
5. use and discern technologies appropriate to the design, testing and production of products, jewellery, furniture or objects
6. demonstrate personal awareness of a design specific practice; apply effective self-directed learning skills; sustain an engagement with contemporary practices and the creative industries
7. recognise the significance of international movements and influences in contemporary design and studio practice; understand and utilise international standards in cultural, regulatory and profession practice judgement
8. recognise the importance of cultural diversity and visual language; respect individuals from all cultures; develop cross cultural collaborations that foster innovation and diversity in design activities, studio practice and production
9. work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating design relevant professional practice and leadership skills; use responsible design, sustainable practices and ethical responsibilities within personal judgements.
Duration and Availability
This major is available to international students studying in Australia on a study visa. Students may enter into this major in a mid-year intake.
