Syllabus: A molecular approach to drug design. Optimisation of lead compounds to drugs for clinical evaluation, including analysis of structure activity relationships and drug development strategies. Chemical principles and reactions vital to drug design and drug action will be emphasised using case studies of clinically important drugs. Selected topics in medicinal chemistry including anticancer, antihypertensives and opiate drugs. Brief introduction and overview of inorganic and organometallic chemistry in medicine. The use of metal complexes in diagnosis and therapy. Synthesis of organometallic complexes with ligands of biological relevance. Synthetic strategies for the preparation of organometallic and inorganic pharmaceuticals. Strategies for the covalent grafting of metal based labels to biological vectors. Photoelectric attenuation of x-rays for medical imaging. Laboratory experiments related to the chemistry topics in this unit.
