Syllabus: This unit has three aims: Review climatic zones and underlying geological and soil forming processes and develop an understanding of major soil groups and classification schemes in the world - with a particular emphasis on Southern Australia. The concepts of soil "health' ie. the integration of Soil physical, chemical and biological factors as a platform for ecosystem function and agricultural land use will be developed; Study the distribution and use of water resources in relation to agriculture, coastal zone management and aquaculture; Describe natural ecosystems in terms of their soil, water and environmental resources and the impact of these on distribution of vegetation and subsequent land and water quality. Completion of this unit will provide a platform for further study in all areas of the Environment and Agriculture degree - environment biology, agriculture, horticulture, coastal zone management and aquaculture.
