Introduction

This Graduate Entry Master (GEM) of health information management enables talented students to obtain a degree that combines the scientific, technical and administrative expertise expected of an entry level health information manager. Successful completion of this degree will ensure graduates obtain the skills to be competent professionals in the field of health information management. In addition, staff have strong links with local, national and international health and information professions, ensuring students have extensive hands-on experience throughout their studies. The health information manager is the bridge between the clinical, management and systems aspects of health and is a fulfilling profession responsible for the collection, storage, analysis and distribution of health care information. The unique competencies of health information managers ensure excellent career opportunities both within Australia and internationally.

Course Entry Requirements

A bachelor degree or equivalent and proof of formal medical terminology training is required.

Specific Requirements

Applicants to this course should hold a certificate or training in medical terminology and academic writing.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is available in both internal and external (online) study modes and is of two years full-time or equivalent part-time study. Where possible, classes will be scheduled in the evening to accommodate students already employed. This course is also available to international offshore students. International onshore students on student visas are not permitted to study this course externally (online).

Course Organisation

This graduate entry master course will enable talented students to obtain a degree that combines scientific, technical and administrative expertise expected of an entry level health information manager. The health information manager acts as the bridge between clinical, management and systems aspects of health. It is a fulfilling profession responsible for the collection, storage, analysis and distribution of healthcare information. The course offers a number of practical experiences in management and clinical coding to ensure students are comfortable in the extraction of data and management of health information.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials. In particular students will be required to purchase the NCCC International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) and the HIMAA Introductory and Intermediate ICD-10-AM coding textbooks.
